I forgot to mention this the other night at the meeting. The Menil Collection in Houston is hosting a large show of the work of the 'Father of Street Photography' - Henri Cartier-Bresson this summer titled "Life is Once, Forever". It ends Sunday, July 24. Admission is free. 1533 Sul Ross.

This is a great opportunity to see so many of his works in person. Shelley and I are going at some point. Perhaps club members might be interested in attending as a group.

Greetings

I would like to pass an invite on to your members. RNC is in the process of developing its next exhibit on Water (and any local connection to it). We are looking for photos that can help us tell the water story here in the Hill Country and particularly of Kerr County. (And since water is in all living things as well as rivers and even rocks – there is a lot of stories to tell.)

We also are looking for images that we can use in education programs. For more information, people can contact me. Thank you!

Call for Images for the 2014 Holiday Dinner Slideshow:   Please put 10 of the year's best images on a disc and give it to Vince Rifici at the October or November club meeting.  No more than 10 because I'm trying to keep the show this year to under an hour.  The images do not have to be related, just choose your best of the year.  Please use .JPG format.  Keep your images full size so they will fill the screen.  A five megabyte images is NOT too large.  Thank you, Vince...

Please post this website, if you think the club would like to see this.
Thanks.

Good Morning All,
Not an "official" PhotoSafari email as such, just letting you know my new book "Urban Photography " is now available on Amazon.

Received this message from Joseph Walsh, former member and upcoming program presenter for January 14, 2014 meeting.

Good Afternoon All,

I am happy to announce that starting today FineArtAmerica.com will be hosting, printing and distributing my work.
For now at least offerings will be limited to duotones from the "Paris...Je t'aime" book plus my other two favorite subjects, trees and water.
To date there are two dozen Parisian images up: in order that FAA can make large, high quality prints, the files are at full resolution and take about forever to upload (or so it seems). I shall keep you posted as soon as the rest are online.

Hoping everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving holiday.  Gobble, gobble!

Shown below is a letter from Dr. Robin Clark asking our members to send her sample photos that she can use in her presentation 'Is Photography Art?'  This presentation will be given at the KACC on September 28th in the downstairs classroom.  Dr. Clark was our judge for the Photoquest 2012 and has given an excellent presentation at our club meeting.  I hope we can help her out.

Hi, Vince....
I'm bothering you instead of Deb Johnson (since she's laid up w/her recent surgery and a bad case of sciatica) to ask if you would post (in the HCCC website newsletter) my request for sample photos to use in my upcoming Photography talk at KACC. The talk (Title: "Is Photography Art?") will coincide w/the Photoquest 2013 show and will be held on September 28th, 10:00-12:00 Noon at KACC. I am preparing a Powerpoint presentation that will feature numerous examples of photography, ranging from professional works to casual snapshots. The examples will be shown, briefly critiqued, and discussed with a view toward identifying qualities that are most often found in two-dimensional fine art photographs. I thought I'd ask if any of your members might be interested in contributing samples of their work for my Powerpoint talk. The photos don't have to be high resolution for Powerpoint (so no danger of 'copyright infringement') and I'd give full written credit (on screen) to each of the participating photographers and their work.
I'd like to gather 'a pool' of photos from which to choose for the presentation. I've already got a number (including a couple of my own), but am hoping to broaden the range of artists, subjects, techniques, etc. to make it a little more interesting. I will also be using several photos from famous photographers (Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, etc.). Members who contribute photos can send them to me electronically (at this address)....but, be sure to tell them to include a note with ALL 'copyright' information (title, photographer's name, year....and to please identify the subject matter if it's not already part of the title).
I would also appreciate you and/or the club passing word of my presentation to other organizations and interested parties in the area. I'm sure you and/or your members have contact with those in other clubs. It would be a great chance for them to come attend the photography presentation (downstairs) that morning and then see the Photoquest 2013 show (it'll be hanging upstairs) afterward. If they want to know about my credentials, please tell them that I am a retired university professor, hold a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from TX Tech....and am a photographer, myself.
Many thanks for your help! All pertinent info about my various presentations can be found on the KACC website under the 'Education' link.

Our interim president, David Jackson, held a captivating workshop and demonstration at our March meeting.  The presentation was entitled 'Portraits with One Light' and illustrated how to shoot formal portraits using only one light and a 3'x3' white foam board reflector.  Amanda was our model, a very attractive and petite woman employed by the Kerrville Police Department.  Amanda is also active as a circuit Roller Derby contestant.  Club members took some very fine portraits that night.  Our thanks to David and Amanda for making the evening a huge success.

This is the first and last opportunity to enter the slide show.   The show will be presented at the 2011 Annual Dinner on December 13th at Billy Gene's Restaurant.

David Jackson gave an inspiring program last night, showing us his nostalgic images.  Want to know how he created those glowing portraits of women?  Here are two links to the software he used to produce them.  These are Photoshop plugins, and they are free!  Be advised that they will work only on a PC, not a MAC.

Red Paw Media (RPM Beautifier, Technicolor-2)
Xero Graphics (Nostalgia)

David has posted a few of the 'instructional images' on his Flickr account.  Here's the address:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/61031553@N04/sets/72157627065586223/

At the July 12th meeting, a membership survey will be available to help the club make improvements.  Please fill it out and leave it with the secretary on the way out.  Pay particular attention to the call for volunteer jobs needed to run the club efficiently.  An explanation of the various jobs shown on the survey is available on this website under <Articles of Interest>.

A new page has been added to the website.  It is shown on the sidebar as 'Directory of Professional Services.'  Any member (professional or amateur) who offers services for a fee can be listed on this page.  If a request comes into the club for a photographic (or other) job, they will be referred to this page.  A copy of the sign-up form will be available at the July 12th meeting, or it can be downloaded from the page.  Only paid club members can be listed.

Don't forget!  This Saturday (June 25th) is our field trip to 'By the River RV Park & Campground.'  It starts at 9 am, but if you want to get in earlier, call Vicki Gibson for arrangements.  All the details are listed under FIELD TRIPS on the sidebar.  Some nice scenic landscapes can be taken at this park.  See ya' there!

Now is the time to start thinking about our 2011 Photoquest exhibition at the KACC.   There are only 8 weeks left to decide what photos you are going to enter, and to have them framed (if you're not going to frame them yourself).  Pre-registration is required, and the deadline is August 20th.  All the forms you need to enter photos in Photoquest are available on this website for downloading and printing.  Go to the sidebar and click on '2011 Photoquest.'  The forms are listed at the bottom of the page.

Our member, Ron Ivey, gave a very interesting and informative program at last Tuesday's meeting.  Our HCCC Flickr Site Administrator, Vicki Gibson, has posted links to some of the stuff Ron presented at the meeting.  Scroll down the sidebar to the HCCC Flickr Site and join the group for a look at some of Ron's exciting images.  Here are some of the Apps and Websites Ron uses to produce his stuff:

The Flickr App Garden
Here's where to find hundreds of cool/helpful/interesting/fun Flickr Apps.
(You can also find The App Garden under the EXPLORE tab at the top of the page)

Flickriver App
"Flickriver is focused on just one thing – the most seamless and fast photo viewing experience possible, keeping visual overload and bloat to the minimum." (Vicki says - Bottom line: Flickriver is a good 'viewer' on black that allows continuous scrolling through your images. Very cool.).

Flickr Hive Mind App (also HERE)
"Flickr Hive Mind is a data mining tool for the Flickr photography database, allowing search by: tags(keywords); Flickr photography groups; Flickr users, their contacts, and favorites; free text; the Flickr Explore algorithm for interestingness."

Picnik - Photo editing made easy!
(Vicki says: This is a FANTASTIC photo editor. Super easy to use. Does all the basics such as exposure correction PLUS some very creative & fun stuff. Highly recommended.)

The club is always looking for new interesting programs to be presented at our meeting.  Over the years we have had many members present their images or show their techniques for taking or making photographs.  If you have an interesting 45 minute presentation, and would like to get on the schedule, please contact the President, Frank Hedges, or the Program Chairperson.  Contact info is shown on the sidebar under 'Officers & Committees.'

Term of office for 2010/2011 Club Officers expires on July 1st.  We will have a brief election of officers at the June 14th meeting.  Most of the officers indicated they will extend their positions for another year, but nominations from the floor will still be accepted.  Coyne Gibson is the nomination chairperson so please tell Coyne if you would like to be nominated for a club position.  Ron Ivey is presenting an interesting program and Vince Rifici will project the 'Show & Tell.'   We are still looking for a person to take charge of the prints at the meeting.

A new group has been set up on Flickr.com for HCCC members to post their photos and share them with other HCCC members.  The Flickr Group is by invitation only, so when you get over there, just click on the JOIN link to get an invitation.  Here is the clickable address:  http://www.flickr.com/groups/hillcountrycameraclub/

You must be a HCCC member to join, post photos to the group pool, or take part in the discussions.  However, be advised that ANYONE can view your photos and see the discussions (so do not post your email address, phone number, or any information that you do not want to make available to the general public).  If you are concerned about people stealing your photos, make sure your license preferences are set at 'NONE' (meaning: All Rights Reserved).

Vicki Gibson is the Site Administrator for the HCCC Flickr Group.

The Hill Country Camera Club conducted the second session of photography classes sponsored by Club Ed.  Advanced Digital Photography was cited by the students as a 'great class.'  Eight students and five helpers attended the class which ran from 6 to 9 pm.  HCCC member Vicki Gibson instructed the class and was aided by Bob & Diana Nelson, Rick Kaczur, Darlene Smith and Vince Rifici.  The camera club will be conducting another series of digital photography classes in the fall.  Call Club Ed on 830-895-4386 to register for the upcoming fall classes.  Tuition is $39 per session.

We had our first meeting at the new location in Wells Fargo Bank on Junction Hwy in Kerrville.  The room was filled to capacity and the audio and visual projections were more than adequate for everyone to hear and see the program.  Looks like we will be staying here, as long as the bank  will let us.  As a bonus, there is a coffee room adjacent to the meeting room, so if we want to serve refreshments in the future, we're all set.  There is no requirement that the meeting end at 9:00 pm.  If necessary, we can extend the quitting time to 9:30 pm.  Hope to see y'all at the next meeting on May 10th.

The next Club Ed class will be conducted by the Hill Country Camera Club on Wednesday, April 20, 2011.  This is the Advanced Digital Photography class.  The time is 6 pm to 9 pm at the Auld Center on 2nd Street in Kerrville.  The topics covered will be 'How to Take Better Pictures With Your Camera' and how to utilize some of the advanced features on the camera, such as 'Burst Mode' and different 'Focus Modes.'  There will also be a brief segment on editing images on the computer.  There is still time to sign up for the advanced class.  Call the Club Ed on (830) 895-4386 for registration.  Tuition is $39.00.

The Hill Country Camera Club conducted the first of the Spring classes at Club Ed last night. Introduction to Digital Photography had 20 students and 7 camera club members to help the students with their cameras.  Feedback sheets indicated the class was enjoyed and valued by everyone.  Something that needs  improvement is the addition of a PA microphone to be heard above the sound of a noisy air conditioner.  The club will set one up for the next class in April.

The club can no longer use the large, wooden light box to view prints for 'Show & Tell'.  When we move to the Wells Fargo Bank next month, we will lose our storage space.  The box is too large for anyone to ferry back and forth from home.  Therefore, we are looking for an alternative way to display prints during the 'Show & Tell' portion of our meeting.  Temporarily we are using a small display easel to show prints, but we are sadly lacking for a way to illuminate them.  If anyone has an idea for any equipment which will fit in the trunk of a car and be stored in a member's home, please send e-mail to the Webmaster.  Would anyone like to take on the job of 'Print Chairman?'

The Hill Country Camera Club will be conducting 2 classes at Club Ed.  The 'Introduction To Digital Photography' class will be on Thursday, March 31, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm.  The 'Advanced Digital Photography' class will be on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm.  If you are interested in attending either of these classes, please call Club Ed on (830) 895-4386 to make reservations.  The Intro class is limited to 15 students and the Advanced class to 10.  If the Spring classes are filled, there will be a repeat in the Fall.  Tuition for each class is $39.
